My journey towards founding UrbanEcofarms springs from a deep personal experience that bridges cultures, continents, and cuisines. Growing up in India, I was immersed in a culture where eating fresh, locally sourced food wasn't just a lifestyle choice—it was a deep-rooted tradition. The vibrant colours and textures of vegetables and fruits fresh from the farm are not just vivid in my memory; they were daily staples, essential to the fabric of our community and family life.
Transitioning to life in the UK, I encountered a starkly different food landscape. The reliance on frozen food, while convenient, felt disconnected from the earthy, fresh flavours I cherished. Even when fresh produce was available, the high costs—often a result of import and export dynamics—made it a luxury rather than a norm. This dissonance was not just about taste or cost; it was about losing a connection to the very source of our nourishment.
Observing local children, often more engaged with technology than the natural world, compounded my resolve. The potential for change was literally in our backyards—spaces lying fallow, ripe for transformation. The idea of utilising these spaces for urban farming, employing methods like hydroponics that bypass the need for soil, began to germinate.
Conversations with locals revealed a shared interest in growing their own food but a common barrier: a lack of knowledge on how to begin. This gap between interest and action sparked an idea. Why not leverage technology, the very thing that often distances us from nature, to reconnect us with it? Thus, the concept of the UrbanEcofarms app was born—a tool designed to demystify urban farming, offering step-by-step guidance, from setup to harvest, fostering a community of growers who could share, exchange, and celebrate the fruits of their labour.
This journey isn't just about changing how we eat. It's about transforming our relationship with food, with each other, and with the planet. It's a call back to the earth, to a time when the food we ate was a direct reflection of the care we poured into the ground. Through UrbanEcoFarms I aspire to sow the seeds of this transformation, making the act of growing and sharing food as natural as the technology that connects us.
